38 Antonio Francisco 20 Lisbon Ord[inary] Seaman "Inglis" 7th May 1836 East I[ndia] Docks 30th March 1837 [Not given - assume London] Discharged Think an error has crept in to the original crew list here - the name/birthplace of a Portuguese sailor has been transposed with details pertaining to James Tilly - the latter would more likely have given his previous ship as "Inglis", and age as 20, whereas Francisco would likely have joined at Madeira with the three other men with Portuguese-sounding names (none of whom stated their age or former ship). It could be that someone else has been missed off the list completely - impossible to know!

[Signed at bottom] Richard Green - ship's owner. [Not however signed by the master, which he should have done.]

  Analysis/notes:  Two of the men listed as crewmen never actually "joined" the ship in London. Only one death occurred at sea (that of Peter MacDonald, aged 45 - oldest man in the ship!), another man was discharged at Bombay. Three (or four - see note beside A. Francisco) seamen with Portuguese-sounding names entered ship at Madeira (outward-bound), two more joined at Bombay. This left a crew of forty men to work their passage back from Bombay to London.
    According to 'arrival & departure' notices extracted by FIBIS from the "Bombay Calendar" - Walmer Castle arrived at Bombay on 29th August 1836 (having stopped only once since leaving Portsmouth, at Madeira, from whence she sailed on 5th June). She spent around two-and-a-half months in Bombay, trading her British cargo in exchange for Indian items (likely cotton or spice), and presumably undergoing a thorough examination as to her seaworthiness etc. and overhauling any damaged masts, spars, or hull timbers, and generally ensuring she was ready for sea. The ship presumably refitted, sailed from Bombay on 14th November 1836, calling briefly at The Cape (of Good Hope) in late January 1837, and arriving in London about two months later, where the entire crew are discharged (and paid).

     ANALYSIS
    Twelve men (including Michael Spinks) are marked as having "deserted" ship on 28th Sept 1841 at Hobart. One man had been discharged earlier in the voyage at Bahia, and two others (the Clerk & Butcher) were granted discharge at Hobart, which meant only thirteen men (including three officers) remained. Seven seamen were shipped at Hobart (to replace the deserters), one of whom was later discharged at Singapore in January 1842, where two new men - one in fact another "Second Mate" joined. The remaining twenty-one crew completed the voyage and were discharged (and paid) back in London.
    Oldest man was the 50-year-old Swede - Michael was second oldest. Youngest on board was an apprentice aged 15; the youngest sailor was 18.
    Twenty-two crewmen were English (of these, two are uncertain - but with English-sounding names & places of birth). There was one Welshman, six Scots and six Irish. Only two foreign sailors served - a Swede and a Prussian.

Volunteeres from HCS Macqueen are here. My ancestor George Fox was a seaman on that Macqueen trip. I wonder if George was on any other voyages.

Brilliant account; brilliantly researched.
They that go down to the sea in ships,
That do business in great waters;
He quiets the night and ebbs the tide... :
